Faculty Assistant Program

This program allows faculty members to select incoming and continuing students to serve as assistants. Each student chosen this way is eligible to work for up to ten hours per week at $10 per hour during the fall semester.

Positions are generally renewable for the spring semester based on performance. These positions are intended to provide a meaningful intellectual experience as you move forward in your degree program.

If you would like to be considered for a position as a faculty assistant please apply online.

Log in to the system with your SU NetID and password and complete your profile accurately. This step is obligatory if you want to be considered for this position. Faculty members will contact students they want to interview directly by email. If nobody contacts you this means that none of the faculty members found a good fit between your profile and their needs.

To maximize your opportunity of being selected, submit your profile by August 29.

If you are hired, you should immediately send an email confirmation to Maureen O’Connor Kicak at mokicak@syr.edu and copy the faculty member who you will work with. Without this email your work cannot begin and your pay cannot be processed. You will then need to meet with Maureen to ensure that all paperwork required by law is complete.

Majors: Information management and technology in the School of Information Studies, Spanish and History in the College of Arts and Sciences; Minor, management studies Whitman School of Management

Favorite course: IST 463 Web Design

An education from the iSchool is unique because it is a perfect combination of management and technology. Being an expert in both of those fields can make you invaluable.

The courses also offer a good mix of academic and real-world experiences. In my favorite course, IST 463 Web Design with Professor Jeff Rubin, we would talk about issues coming from his business [Internet Consulting Services], and we could see classroom lessons applied on the web. Our final projects were as good as professional. Now, I have fresh skills in web development, and I really want to pursue them. At a recent interview, I must have referenced my education, job experience, and skills a dozen times. All of these things came from my experience at the iSchool.

Activities/Honors: Work in ITELL, TA for CCNA, Information Studies Dean's List, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Club Soccer

Favorite course: IST 200 E-Research

The courses available to me and the number of professors who are leaders in their fields set the iSchool apart from others. The constant activities and opportunities to grow make the iSchool a great place to prepare for a future job. Someday, I would like to run my own network consulting firm.
