Amanda Abbott

B.S. Information Management and Technology ‘12

As a recent graduate from Syracuse University with a B.S. in Information Management & Technology and a B.A. in Geography, I am very excited and honored to be chosen as an Alumni Class Leader. I was born and raised in California, so attending Syracuse University for my undergraduate career was a big decision for both my family and me. At first, moving across the country and adjusting to campus life (and the weather) was an overwhelming task, but due to the iSchool’s small undergraduate class size and its dedicated faculty, Syracuse University and iSchool quickly became my home away from home.

Within my first weeks of classes at the iSchool, I knew I was among some of the most creative and intelligent students at Syracuse University. Because I did not come to Syracuse with a strong technology background, a lot of the concepts I learned during my freshmen year were very new to me, but my professors and their teaching assistants helped me to understand and succeed within my coursework. Most of my professors had very reputable industry experience, which helped me to realize the relevance of my coursework and the importance of its application to the real world. The iSchool offers a variety of classes which allow students to not only sample the many different subjects within Information Management & Technology, but also allow students to concentrate in particular subject area, like project management, networking or social media. Furthermore, the flexibility of the iSchool’s curriculum enabled me to double major in Geography at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Public Affairs.

The iSchool offers a lot of great networking opportunities. During my post-grad career search, I felt very prepared and confident applying and interviewing for jobs. By taking advantage of the iSchool’s career advisement and counseling, I was able to graduate and immediately start a career in the information technology field.

I would be very excited to answer any questions about the iSchool, the Information Management & Technology program or about Syracuse University in general! Current students, prospective students and alumni, please e-mail at amandaeabbott@gmail.com.
